My girlfriend got into Yale and I’m going to be following her across the country in a few months because I love her and sunshine is overrated. How’s the OPPO community on the East Coast?

I grew up in West Hartford. So... that’s pretty irrelevant ^_^
Come out to drive in Harriman when you can. Not sure what the roads in southern CT are like.

I'm a Rhode Island Opponaut, which is like half an hour away from being a Connecticut Opponaut. I think there's a few other New England Oppos around here.

Car culture is awesome, winters can be cold and summers are hot and humid. CT is pretty rural outside of Hartford and the NYC burbs. Also bugs. Lots of bugs. Buy a sailboat and live by the water and you’ll be fine. New Haven itself is nice in parts and a total $#@$ing dump in others. A lot better than it used to be, but keep your wits about you at all times.

Welcome to the east coast. I think there are a decent number of us up in the northeast. Definitely a few of us driving about in NY.

Actually come to think of it, CT-8 through the Naugatuck River valley is one of the nicest higher-speed roads I know well. On a summer evening at twilight, with the top down... tingles the spine thinking about it :)

Any car you bring with you will rust to bits. Do they have rust in California? I’m in Fairfield and when the weather gets nice I’d be happy to show you around the roads I cruise on. You sure as hell won’t find anything fun in New Haven.
For real fun there’s Lime Rock Park itself. The roads in the surrounding area are fun if you can find ones that wind around the lakes. It’s a hike from New Haven, but you’ll be dying to get out of that shithole. It’s pretty much the Berkshires when you’re that far up, and it’s beautiful countryside. It makes a nice day trip.
If you’re actually living in New Haven, everything you own will be stolen at some point. You’ll probably get mugged. And worst of all, get ready to interact with Yale people.

Route 8 is so much fun when it twists through the Valley! You should try Route 7 (late at night) up north too, it’s a blast, it follows the river the whole way.

I live in Enfield, CT (near the Mass boarder), and as far as cruise nights go, there is Mark’s Cruise night on Mondays near Windsor Locks. Also a cruise night every Friday in Vernon. But the big ticket show is caffeine and carburetors in Canaan (near Greenwich) every couple of months or so. Plenty of racing at Lime Rock over the spring/summer, as well as Stafford Springs for modified racing. As for non car activities, plenty of hiking in Mass/Vermont/New Hampshire, or take the train into NYC

1. Lime rock
2. NW and NE corners are great ways to quickly get out of the coastal/ct valley suburban sprawl.
3. winter makes you appreciate the other 9 months more. (personally i like it) I had 2 roommates form cal that never left their dorm rooms. fall is awesome. basic girls do have cinnamon down to a science.
4.Boston and new york a 2 hour trip away.
5. cape cod and Rhode island are a few hours away.

Thanks for the advice on the roads, and I think I’ll just have to get used to hanging out with Yale people, my girlfriend is gonna be one of them!

You know, I always bail out to 84 when I go up to my mom now; but I’m flashing back to visiting my aunt and uncle up in Torrington as a kid, and wow, you’re right!

I’m from Boston and moved to LA. In Boston one winter we had 3 months straight of no sunshine. None at all. That did it for me. SoCal is the best.

And like the other guys said below, the northern parts of route 7 & 8 are pretty sweet. I especially like route 7, but it’s got a lot of traffic.

I thought you were joking about the crime thing. Just looked up new Haven crime stats. Fuck. Double fuck. How likely is a bright blue wrx sti to be stolen or vandalized?

Not joking about the crime. New Haven is very sketchy. You won’t get mugged around the Yale area, but a few blocks away there are kids selling crack. For real (I know a couple public defenders). Your car will be a target, especially if it’s an STI. Get a hidden kill switch installed, a serious high-end alarm, lo-jack, or all three. Don’t mess around. If possible, pay for off-street parking and get that sucker in a secure garage.
My 2006 WRX wagon was stolen from the street directly in front of my house in Fairfield. It was a bit flashy... Lowered on coil-overs, sedan front end, front mount intercooler, big exhaust. But it was literally parked right in front of my house’s bay window, underneath a street light. Thieves have serious balls these days. I live a block away from Bridgeport, so that’s why it got nabbed. That was nearly two years ago and still nothing has turned up. I’m not holding my breath.
